2, Snow White and the madness of truth: ”Just U-turn in the middle east!”
I mentioned earlier that my opinions once made a u-turn inside a needles eye once, or twice: The most dramatically U-turn took place during the strange occasion in Stockholm, as the ambassador Zvi Mazel, during an conference on genocide, thrashed an art installation by the artist Dror Feiler. Everyone said in one voice: “That just isn’t done!”, and of course: It isn’t. But why did he do it?and who was this Mr Mazel? No one really cared, and instead all were fondling the questions on who Dror Feiler was, and what his work for peace meant.
I got more and more curious about what the articles didn’t write, especially as suddenly Mr Sharon, with all his heart supported Mr Mazel, hence, I decided to look for the news in Israeli papers – and there it was – the U-turn! In both Ha-Aretz and Jerusalem Post, and suddenly in the Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter, quoting its Israeli colleagues, you could learn that these three guys both knew, and fought each other before, when Mr Feiler deserted the Israeli army, from under General Sharon.
The moral right to desert the army: Of course you have the right to desert, or criticize the politics of your country, and if Dror Feiler made both of it, both Mr Sharon and Mr Mazel must be able to face it, and if there’s a subpoena for deserting the army, Mr Feiler will have to face his destiny.
The problem lies in whether the actions at the exhibitions were comprehensible or not. If you as an Israeli ambassador with experiences and knowledge on different wars on Israel, and suicide-bombings on Israeli civilians, suddenly get to know that a deserter has made an art installation, that is possible, if you want, to interpret as an anti semitical statement, glorifying suicide attacks, would you be surprised if you were provoked? Or? And if it was a deserter publically known for his desertation and “anti-Israeli commitments” (read critical remarks on the politics) of course it wouldn’t be suitable
Knowledge? – arrogance? I really don’t know what would bother me the most: If the Swedish art curators, and conference hosts knew about all this on Feiler-Mazel-Sharon, or if they didn’t
The fact that we got ourselves a minor diplomatic quarrel with Israel. At major crises, threatening the national security of Sweden, the freedom of speech is no longer applicable, The security of the nation is always prior to freedom of speech especially if there are possibilities of subpoena on two different laws at the same time. But for media in Sweden the freedomof speech is always prior to security, and for many journalists of course prior to reflection, taste and wits.
U-turn: I haven’t changed my overarching opinions on the subject: Middle East. I still have critical opinions on how both sides use violence, and as the stronger part, I think that Israel should have a greater responsibility. And When it comes to responsibility, of course the “barrier” is outrageous – although it actually seems to work, as spontaneous suicide attacks seem to have decreased drastically. The fact that powers outside of Palestine and Israel, are promoting these attacks is totally unacceptable. The problem is neither black nor white, but black-n-white-grey-mixed to its extreme. And it is becoming more and more blurred in colour for each incident, making it impossible to find an easy opinion. Maybe my luck?
What would have happened with my opinions if I hadn’t experienced this in my solitude, but in a certain group where all thought the same about everything? Would I have been able to see the rationality in the foolish reaction of Mr Mazel? As the knews were presented by Swedish media, and with indignation for Mazel’s attack on the freedom of speech, there was only room for one opinion.
‘t’s Not my war! How would I react then, if my loved ones were killed by a bomb, and I, at an exhibition abroad, would see the murderer pictured in a flattering way, would I then be able to act in a diplomatic and appropriate way? But that is the reality that both Zvi Mazel and Handi Jaradat (the suicide bomber pictured at the exhibition) share, to see their loved ones die slaughtered, a reality I find that both the powers inducing and using suicidebombers for their sordid purposes, the artist Dror Feiler and, in it’s way even media used for their own purposes.
We have a freedom of speech, to help the poor and frail of our society, not to make money from their misery, and then defend our right to do so.

Hi
I have never deserted the Israeli army. I have served 3 years 1969-1972. I refused to serve in the occupied territories 1970.
So all theoretical reasoning aroud being a desrter is done for nothing. In war you do either killing which means kill other soldiers who are being a threat to ones life or you murdet which means kill innocent people who are not a direct threat to your life. I was ok (allthogh not happy) with the first one but refused to be part of the second one.
I apologize for mistreating facts, and am glad that Mr Feiler has sent the correct ones. How ever, I will not change my text because of the problems with letting down our constitutional rights, especially since these details only changes minor problems of my text.
It was of course aboninable by the ambassador to thrash the work of art of Mr Feiler, especially since in my (personal) eyes it was a quite easy-interpreted work of art, interpreted in the wrong direction by the ambassdor. But never the less; when I looked into the story I could bit by bit understand the rage of Mr Zvi, and got a more nuanced view upon the problems of the Middle East. For that reason I haven’t signed any list of protest on Israeli attacs on Gaza, and won’t do it until it is a double list, protesting on the Hamas actions against Israeli civilians. The most visible signs of antisemitism and antiislamicism are that people demonstrate i front of synagogues and mosques shouting delicate historical quotations, instead of discussing peacefully outside embassies. As long as this our reality – we have to help both sides.
